A truck carrying Niger nationals returning from an Islamic holiday event in Mali unexpectedly deviated from its route and stopped in the middle of the Sahara Desert. A vehicle breakdown that occurred in a remote area more than 80km away from the Asamaka border checkpoint immediately led to a survival crisis. Despite desperate repair attempts that lasted for several days, the vehicle did not budge, and even drinking water ran out in the fierce heat, leaving those stranded helplessly on the brink of death.

The hope of rescue rested on just two survivors. They walked dozens of kilometers through the bitter heat and thirst and managed to report the situation to the authorities. However, when the rescue team arrived at the scene, the scene they encountered was horrendous. Dozens of dead bodies were scattered around and under the truck, and rescue teams had to quickly retrieve and bury them at the scene. What's even more unfortunate is that it is estimated that about 100 people were on board the truck at the time, raising the tragic possibility that the actual number of victims could be larger.

Some people were miraculously rescued. The rescue team that was returning after clearing the scene happened to find another broken down vehicle, where about 60 people who had been trapped in the desert for as many as three days due to a dead battery were standing at the crossroads of life and death. This incident is not simply an unfortunate accident, but clearly reveals the structural vulnerability faced by young people and immigrants who have no choice but to cross dangerous border areas in search of a better life and economic opportunities.
